James (Jim) Dinning
Jim Dinning serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Western Financial Group. As well, he serves as a director on a number of public, private and not for profit boards.
Mr. Dinning is a graduate of Queen’s University with two degrees: a Bachelor of Commerce in 1974 and a Masters in Public Administration in 1977. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Calgary in 2002, and currently serves as chancellor of the University of Calgary
Until December, 2004, Mr. Dinning held the position of executive vice president, TransAlta Corporation. Prior to joining TransAlta in 1997, Mr. Dinning held several key positions during his 11 years as a member of the legislative assembly in Alberta. Of note is Mr. Dinning’s service as provincial treasurer from 1992 to 1997.
In April 2011, Mr. Dinning was presented with the TaxFighter Award by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, which is awarded to individuals who have shown a commitment to taxpayer emancipation. Additionally, Mr. Dinning is currently a member of the Independent Panel on the HST, which examines the positives and negatives of the HST and the PST/GST in British Columbia.
On October 31, 2011, Mr. Dinning was appointed to lead a six-month facilitation process to enhance rail freight service by the Government of Canada.
Mr. Dinning is married, has four children and resides in Calgary.
