CALGARY, AB – Ground-breaking research on the issue of public support for resource development in western Canada was among the work that landed Michael Cleland, Canada West Foundation’s former Nexen Executive-in-residence, the prestigious 2015 Canadian Energy Person of the Year.

In announcing the honour, the Energy Council of Canada stated:

Mr. Cleland has demonstrated his leadership in the public and private sectors in advancing energy issues during a distinguished 40-year career. He has held senior executive positions in government and with two of Canada’s leading industry associations in the energy sector as well as playing a prominent role as a board member of a number of energy organizations. Most recently, he has provided insights on energy in Canada based on his leading-edge public policy research.

Dylan Jones, the Foundation’s President and Chief Executive Officer, noted Cleland produced research to advance energy policy and energy literacy during his time with the Foundation as Nexen executive-in-residence. His work includesFrom the Ground Up: Earning Public Support for Resource Development; a background paper on Unpacking Social Licence; and, Engine of Growth, a paper outlining the Foundation’s strategy for natural resource development. Cleland also authored numerous blogs for the Let’s Talk Energy series.

“Mr. Cleland worked tirelessly to advance energy policy and energy literacy on behalf of Nexen and the Foundation – in Mr. Cleland’s hands, ours was a great partnership,” Jones said.

The Canadian Energy Person of the Year Award was established by the Energy Council of Canada in 2001 to recognize and pay tribute to a Canadian energy leader who has made a significant impact at the national and international levels with the energy sector.
