The State of the West report explores the strategic positioning of western Canada within the new global economy. The 1990s were a period of great change in which a global environment emerged. This new environment is defined by trade liberalization, international mobility and technological advancement. If western Canadians hope to grow and prosper in this new global environment, they must first know who they are and where they stand on a national and international stage. The State of the West report offers public policy figures and decision makers many of the tools that the West needs to move forward by providing an overview of key demographic and economic trends in western Canada.

The State of the West report launches a bold new initiative by the Canada West Foundation, Building the New West, which explores the strategic positioning of western Canada within the new global economy.

The Canada West Foundation would like to thank our many friends and supporters who have made the publication of State of the West: Western Canadian Demographic & Economic Trends possible. In particular, we would like to thank the Kahanoff Foundation and the Privy Council Office of the Government of Canada.
