Think we can stick-handle our way through the next four years without a cross-check from behind? Think again. This new Trump administration will be nothing like the first – the game plan is already being revealed.

Take President-elect Trump’s “America First” initiative, which aims to bolster the U.S. economy by driving foreign businesses, including Canada’s, to re-locate operations to American shores. His global tariff plan, which starts at 10% but will increase 5% every year the U.S. runs a trade deficit (or might also decrease 5%), is by design chaotic. This global tariff, this global threat, has already planted seeds of uncertainty and instability.

What does this economic policy mean for Western Canada and especially Alberta, where over 30% of its GDP is reliant on exports with the U.S.? Are we making it easier or harder for the U.S. to pull jobs and investment out of Canada? Softwood lumber anyone?

Most importantly, can we create an island of stability and certainty for investors in the maelstrom of Trump’s trade wars? What will it take?

Join former Minister of Finance, Industry and Foreign Affairs John Manley to discuss what we currently know about Trump’s trade policy plans and solutions to create an investable economy.
