Water plays a crucial role in the life of Canadians; however, with its abundance in nature, water is often taken for granted, undervalued, and overused. This neglect can result in an array of issues and growing concerns, with major Canadian cities being greatly impacted.

Based on academic research as well as government websites and policy documents, On Tap – Urban Issues in Canada provides an overview of Canadian water policy issues, with a strong emphasis placed on urban water policy issues.
The article concentrates on why Canadians should be concerned with water policy, how water availability in Canada is dependent on urban centres, and the roles municipal governments play in regards to water policy.

It is the first of three Canada West Foundation studies that look at urban water management issues facing western Canada’s largest cities. It is authored by the Foundation’s Senior Policy Analyst, Susan McFarlane, and Intern, Erik Nilsen.
