Governments across the country have either made recommendations or, like the Government of Alberta, mandated that every new or revised post-secondary program must have a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component. This is a recognition that employers have reported difficulty in finding people with the skills they need, and students have graduated without key competencies required for the workforce. The call for all students to have good WIL experiences during their studies has become louder. Recently, governments have increased support for employers to engage in WIL by subsidizing wages of students in formal WIL programs, but still, too few students have opportunities for formal co-op placements or internships. Meanwhile, very few employers see themselves as part of the learning ecosystem.
There are ways to make WIL more available to students and for employers to grow their own workforce. They require a radical rethink of the role of each player – employers in businesses of all sizes, students and the faculty at post-secondary institutions.

Dr. David J. Finch | Professor and Senior Fellow at Mount Royal University’s Institute for Community Prosperity
Dr. David J. Finch’s professional background reflects a commitment to the convergence of theory and practice. David holds a Ph.D. in management and is an active educator, scholar and practitioner. David currently holds several academic appointments including Professor and Senior Fellow at Mount Royal University Institute for Community Prosperity in Calgary, where he leads the CityXLab; a Fellow at the Henley Business School at the University of Reading in the U.K; and, an Adjunct Professor at the at the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph. Dr. Finch has authored over 50 scholarly papers and published in journals such as the Academy of Management Learning & Education, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Sport Management, and the Corporate Reputation Review. Prior to joining academia, Dr. Finch held progressively senior roles in areas of corporate strategy in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K.
Janet Lane | Director of the Human Capital Centre
Janet Lane champions the development of a skilled and productive workforce able to fulfill the potential of the West’s — and by extension, Canada’s — economy. As the demands on the workforce evolve, her work focuses on the need to understand and build the competencies required for new jobs and changing work environments.
Janet is a subject matter expert in literacy and essential skills development and in leading programs and organizations in the literacy field. Janet has advised and led projects involving sponsors and stakeholders in both the public and private sectors. Previously, she built a successful career in financial services. Her education, experience and proven track record for growing organizations contributes to her ability to connect human development with the skills and competencies that western Canadian industries need.
