David Elton served as President of the Canada West Foundation from 1980 to 1997. He is President of the Max Bell Foundation of Calgary. He is a professor emeritus of the University of Lethbridge, where he was a faculty member for 27 years. He  has served as Chair of the Board of Philanthropic Foundations Canada and continues to serve on the boards of a number of national research and public-policy oriented organizations. He was invested in the Order of Canada in September 2015.
