Alberta is embedded within Canada’s economy, society, and political system; whatever happens in the province, for better or for worse, ripples out across the nation. This allows the Government of Alberta the luxury of policy experimentation, and gives them the opportunity to set an example for what can be done with the province’s energy wealth.

The Alberta’s Energy Legacy publication is the capstone to a public policy proposal that the Canada West Foundation has been behind for the past three years. It is the third phase of the Foundation’s Investing Wisely Project, launched with the purpose of providing a more detailed answer to the question of how earnings on the province’s saved revenue could be used to improve the lives of Albertans and other Canadians—an idea that stemmed from the second phase of the Project.

The goal of this publication is to generate a short list of exciting, thoughtful, and transformative ideas that enables Albertans to see of the benefits that might accrue from systematic saving and investment strategy. These ideas illustrate the variety of ways Albertans can reach sustainable economic development.

Alberta’s Energy Legacy was edited by the Canada West Foundation’s Director of Research, Robert Roach, with contributions from experts throughout the organization.
