Canada West Foundation January 2016 Update

Improving lives in the West – and all of Canada

THANK YOU! Every dollar you contribute supports evidence-based, non-partisan research at the Canada West Foundation. In a time when fake news, alternative facts and half truths can sway public thinking, our focus on championing information over misinformation matters more than ever.

We remain relentlessly focused on the critical issues facing the West, and Canada. In 2016, we published research that captured attention in the media, government, industry and civil society. Our three centres put forward fresh thinking on moving beyond energy project gridlock by encouraging communities more effectively; developing a new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs; and spending infrastructure dollars wisely to build the right projects in the right places to get products to international markets. Our 2016 research includes:

Know, Do, Understand: Development of competencies in Canada’s schoolchildren

Fair Enough: Assessing community confidence in energy authorities

A Smoother Track for Exports: A framework for Alberta rail policy

Look Out: Toward a climate strategy that reduces global emissions

The TPP: The West wants in

Power Up: The hydro option

The Infrastructure that Matters Most: The need for investment in Canada’s trade infrastructure

Start ‘Em Up: Incubating nextgen innovators

Some Assembly Required: Cross-border infrastructure that creates jobs and growth

A Matter of Trust: The role of communities in energy decision-making

This year, our focus will include:

• Modernizing the National Energy Board
• Matching skills with jobs based on competencies
• Navigating preferential trade in the Trump era and how to sell more to Asia
• Getting to successful Indigenous economic engagement
• Getting from innovation to adoption

We are proud you have chosen to support our work making a difference on the major policy challenges facing the West, and Canada, at home and on the global stage. Truly, we couldn’t do it without you.

THANK YOU! Your support makes our work possible
