Canada West Foundation January 2016 UpdatePresident_Quote_MAR2016

A small team…making a big difference!

Your ongoing financial support enabled the Canada West Foundation to make a significant difference in 2015 on the issues that affect westerners’ lives.

Under the leadership of three thought-leading directors, our policy centres published original, ground-breaking research that garnered national media attention and has been read and commented on by industry, government and academia. Our research on public support for resource industries, the heavy burden changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program imposed on the West and the need to prioritize trade infrastructure is frequently noted and referenced.

Quite simply, the research, commentary and convening conducted through the research centres is making a difference. And we couldn’t do it without you.

It is a critical time to engage the public on key challenges facing the West. In 2016, the Canada West Foundation will be at the forefront of these issues, including:

getting our products to market

renewing public trust in resource development

giving our workforce the skills they need for the evolving economy

With your help, we will continue to advocate on behalf of people like you for many years to come.

Research Centre 2015 Snapshots

Centre for Natural Resources Policy

As the go-to source on climate commentary, the Foundation’s experts appeared in national and international media. Our carbon pricing ideas informed discussions among first ministers. In 2015, we brought indigenous and oil and gas leaders together to talk about building trust in energy development, convening that continues this year.

Centre for Human Capital Policy

Our research on changes to the Temporary Foreign Workers Program exposed the heavy burden on western employers. Following that work, the federal government announced in June 2015 amendments aimed at easing the impact of tighter restrictions on foreign workers. This year, our work on workplace competencies will drive the productivity growth so essential to the West’s prosperity in a more competitive world.

Centre for Trade & Investment Policy
Carlo Dade, Director

We brought government, shippers and transporters together in 2015 to improve supply chains and trade infrastructure to provide food, energy and materials to the emerging global middle class. Our work on trade infrastructure investment has had a big impact on government thinking. Now, we are focusing on public policy that encourages western firms to grow exports when Canada signs trade agreements. A shift from trade agreements to growing trade is in order.

Economic & Fiscal Policy Division
Janice Plumstead, Senior Economist

EFP_Stats_2015

We assessed the four provincial budgets in the West on their long-term strategic vision and value for tax dollars spent.
Our commentary garnered regional and national media attention. The Currents economic newsletter gave western Canadians timely insights into how global economic forces affect the daily lives of westerners and drive the need for greater diversification.
